Visual Effects from the Star Wars Special Edition

Jabba The Hutt

A sequence filmed in 1977, but never incorporated into the film because of technological and financial concerns. No longer a concern, it seems.

  • This establishing shot is impressive. Seems to have a slight redesign from ROTJ, but nicely integrated with the BG image. Hope he animates well. I do not envy the rotoscope artist that had to whittle away at the portly english actor. I have retouched the tail portion of this to remove advertising that obscured the lower right corner.

  • This looks a little more like the Jabba I remember. If you look at the background, you'll see that greedo was not alone. Good thing about makeup molds, you can cast as many of those suckers as you need...errr...can afford!

  • Compare this to Jabba as he appeared in JEDI in 1983--which will be replaced with a digital version in the Jedi Special edition.

  • Mr portly is seen here. The color restoration of the negative should also prove quite exciting. Again, great roto work.

  • Here's a better picture to check the character integration. The redesign on Jabba is interesting, and these two angles do not flatter it well--but then again we are unsure as to how finished the shot is. People who have seen it say it is incredible!

  • Quality on this shot is low, but what do you expect for bootleg images? Kinda neat to see Harrison acting against a slug inserted 20 years later. Ought to be quite a kick in the pants onscreen, not to mention another boost to Harrison's career.

  • Again, Excellent roto work removing the english fella. His presence helped a lot with matching eyelines, for sure. Nice lighting match as well.
