Visual Effects from the Star Wars Special Edition

Mos Eisley Sequence

  • The Ronto peppers the streets of Mos Eisley, and seems to dislike Jawas on its back (seen here bucking some off). Softimage on the creature, I assume. The city in the background is a tabletop miniature made of paint buckets and other greeblies. It is photographed, scanned, and enhanced with photoshop software. Actors are shot in the ILM parking lot, and matted in. You can see this process in the IMAX film. Highly impressive work.

  • Just to show how much they love this creature, here is another comparison shot. Looks like we're going to need a pied piper in Mos Eisley!

  • Seems this comparison shot represents the original plate, and the digital fix, rather than a patch to the original problem (see the Why Go Digital? page for the original)

  • Now this one is Really impressive. The back three-quarter rim lighting takes the edge off of the daylight composite. As any one who does this stuff knows, daylight is the hardest thing to tackle, and stylish lighting helps to remove the curse of reality.

  • Here's a 1997 version of the Falcon blast-off. More air traffic, and a replaced flacon.
  • Here's the original:
